Assesment methods:
During the semester there will be two written tests of knowledge in a lecture in the range of lectures and exercises with a maximum score of over 10 points. Students must develop four projects in laboratory exercises with the scores given to each of 10 points. Student who receives less than 15 points can not be granted credit.
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The student will acquire knowledge of the experimental study methods using X-ray interaction and electron radiation with matter. Through practical tasks he obtained experimental experience with X-ray diffractometer and transmission electron microscope. At the same time in the evaluation of measured data will receive an overview of the possibilities of application of diffraction methods and electron microscopy in the study of metallic and non-metallic materials .
Course contents:
The generation of the x-ray radiation and its monochromatization, the selection conditions for x-ray diffraction, intensity of x-ray radiation, atomic and structural factors.
X-ray instrumentation, radiation sources, x-ray detection of radiation.
Experimental techniques in x-ray diffractometry, films and diffractometric methods.
Processing of diffraction data and their interpretation, qualitative and quantitative analysis, accurate determination of the lattice parameters, the phase integral analysis, measurement of macro-and microstress, the determination of dislocation density measurement, the measurement of the crystalite size, texture measurement
Electron microscopy, principles of TEM and SEM, instrumentation, resolution, depth of field, interaction of radiation with matter, the formation of electron contrast
Sample preparation, replicating techniques, preparation of thin metallic and non-metallic foils.
Electron diffraction and microdiffraction. The interpretation of the TEM image, interpretation of the diffraction patterns.
