Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Student obtains the basic characteristics of scientific knowledge and scientific rationality. He knows the structure and characteristics of empirical research, research process, scientific hypothesis, variables in scientific hypotheses, reliability and validity of scientific instruments and their types. The student understands the principle of critical thinking (i.e. the thought process of induction, deduction, interpretation, argumentation, evaluation, inference and others, which are conditioned by higher cognitive processes such as generalization, abstraction, idealization, analogy, analysis, synthesis, modeling, etc.). The student is able to identify and formulate a research problem, to find information in relevant databases and to find a suitable methodological apparatus for solving the identified research goals. S/he knows the formal valid structure for the final work on the STU MTF and understands the content focus of its individual parts.
 
Course contents:
The history and development of scientific rationality – from myth to proof, classical mechanics, evolutionary theory, industrial and scientific-technological revolution, information society (superindustrial revolution), various models of science in the 20th century. Basic definitions of science - definition of scientific rationality (general, systematic, predictive, explanatory, critical, objective, exact nature of scientific research), basic characteristics of science and scientific thinking (scientific method, language, structure). Scientific explanation and critical thinking in science – relationship of scientific theory and scientific law, relationship of theory and hypothesis, problem of fact, objectivity of scientific research, nature of critical thinking and analysis of cognitive operations, abilities and attitudes that make it conditional. Methods of scientific research – classification of scientific methods, theoretical and empirical methods, qualitative and quantitative methods (types, functions and objectives), relationship of naturalistic and positivistic paradigm in scientific explanation, difference between interpretation and explanation. Research and research projects – structure and characteristics of empirical research, types of research in terms of its objectives, qualitative and quantitative research, sequence of steps in the research process, scientific hypothesis (form, variable, purpose), reliability and validity of research tools, proposal of scientific research – objectives, research questions, research methods and the research process. Elaboration of the master thesis– characteristics of the professional text, types of expert texts, the difference between the citation and paraphrase – the possibilities of literary sources according to valid norms, the research, the abstract, the keywords – their essence, methodology of writing the thesis at STU MTF.
