Title of the thesis:Detection of Heart Failure Using Ontologies
Summary:In this thesis project we examined a medical ontology that describes the domain of heart failure. The task was to construct ontology for the selected domain, which could be recognized as great step in systematization of existing medical knowledge. Congestive heart failure is a state when the heart cannot provide sufficient cardiac output to satisfy metabolic needs of the body. The thesis focuses on facilitation of ICT to assist medical personnel in detection and management of this chronic condition. The main benefit of ontology is that there presented knowledge is both in computer and human-readable form. We discussed frameworks which could provide us methods for describing, reading and writing ontology data. In particular ­Protege tool and Apache Jena were chosen. We covered the next objectives: 1. To learn about heart failure condition and challenges in diagnostics. 2. To analyze needs of medical personnel related to application of ICT in support of their activities. 3. Design and implement information system based on ontologies to support detection of heart failure. 4. Test the system in clinical setting.
