Title of the thesis:Design of a batch stirred fermentor for ethanol production
Summary:The aim of this diploma work is the batch stirred bioreactor design for ethanol production with yeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae under anaerobic conditions. The bioreactor volume and number of bioreactors is chosen on the basis of potential market requirement. By mathematical modeling the year and the batch production is estimated from suitable kinetic data adopted from literature. The mathematical model is set up on the knowledge combination of engineering considerations - metabolic processes (microbial phenomena) which include stoichiometry, thermodynamics of cell cultivation, microbial kinetics and the physical processes (transport phenomena) such as mixing, power consumption, mass and heat transfer. High concentration of ethanol is chosen as the optimization criterion for determination of the fermentation time. Although bioreactor scale-up does not only involve pure engineering considerations but economic considerations as well the next text and discussion will be restricted to the engineering aspects of scale-up.
