Title of the thesis:Design of a batch stirred fermentor for gluconic acid production
Summary:The industrial scale batch stirred fermentor design for gluconic acid production with molds Aspergillus niger is the ultimate goal of this diploma work. On the basis of the potential market the bioreactor volume and number of bioreactors are designed. The year and the batch production are estimated from suitable kinetic data adopted from literature by mathematical modeling. Mathematical model is made up by knowledge combination of metabolic and physical processes and allows to scale - up. Metabolic processes (microbial phenomena) involve investigation of stoichiometry and thermodynamics of cell cultivation and microbial kinetics. Physical processes (transport phenomena) deals mainly with mixing, power consumption, heat and mass transfer. The maximum gluconic acid productivity is chosen as the optimization criterion and determines the fermentation time. Finally economic aspects are performed on the basis of preliminary cost analysis (capital and operation costs) and a profitability analysis (return of investments) is made.
