Title of the thesis:Ecosystem services (ESS) approach towards sustainable urban revitalization - model area Trnava
Summary:Urban areas are dependent on ecosystems and their services to sustain long-term condition for life, health, security, good social relations and other important aspects of human welfare. However, the ecosystems and their services have an important impact on human wellbeing and sustainable urban development; the process of urbanization is often times at the expense of the loss of valuable ecosystems and lands for satisfying the urban demands. It is mostly caused by a lack of information and understanding about the effects of decisions on the environment which can lead to the loss of essential and beneficial ecosystem services. Therefore, the need for applying an ecosystem services based approach into existing planning instruments is increasing. Through research (such as literature research and interviews with experts and practitioners) realized in Slovakia and Saxony (Germany) and through the practical example from Saxony this diploma thesis explores connections among ecosystem services approach, sustainable urban revitalization and sustainable urban development from a theoretical and also practical perspective. The most significant linkages of ESS approach is to the environmental dimension of sustainable urban development (SUR) from both perspectives. Thus this approach should be primary incorporated into instruments of environmental and landscape planning. However, this approach is mostly known among researches in both examined countries due to lack of awareness among practitioners and public this approach is not used nor implemented into existing planning instruments; which do not mention the ecosystem services either in Saxony nor in Slovakia. Fundamental aspect of this approach is economic valuation, which is not identified in existing instrument either. The identification of monetary values of ecosystem services via these instruments can improve connection of this approach with economic and social dimensions of sustainable urban development, not only from a theoretical but also from practical point of view. The final part of this diploma thesis demonstrates an instrument with implemented approach of ESS. It is a strategy of neighborhood revitalization (model area in Slovakia). It shows that this approach contributes to a full consideration of existing benefits that nature provides within urban environment, and thus affects the process of revitalization towards sustainable urban development.
Key words:ecosystem services, sustainable urban development, urban revitalization
