Title of the thesis:Experimental investigation of soil properties
Summary:The aim of my work was to analyze the shear stress parameters of coarse grained soils evaluated from laboratory and field testing. Six tests were performed in large shear box machine with 4 different normal stresses for each material. Dynamic penetration tests were performed for the sample of well graded gravel (GW). The values of angle of shear resistance measured by laboratory and field tests are significantly different due to different relative density of the tested material. The measured values of angle of shear resistance for gravely soils with angular grains are bigger than presumed values of angle of shear resistance published in Slovak standards and typical values for comparable soils presented in the table 1.2 published by Lambe [8]. My experimental work has shown that the shape of the particles and density of the coarse soil have significant impact on shear strength of coarse soils. There are no differences between the values of angle of shear resistance measured in the large (300x300 mm) and in the standard (diameter 100 mm) direct shear equipment for sandy specimens. The values of deformation modulus determined from the laboratory tests are lower than comparable experience. The low value of deformation modulus of gravel determined from the field tests could be explained by low relative density of the sample. The strength and deformation properties of soils are basic input data for geotechnical design and reliability of geotechnical design depend on proper characteristic values of geotechnical parameters determination.
