|Title of the thesis:||depth penetration measurements of water soluble impregnating compounds into paper sheets|
|Summary:||The aim of the thesis was to design and test an experimental technique for measurements of depth of penetration of water soluble impregnating compounds into paper sheets. The method would then be used for monitoring kinetics of the impregnation. An apparatus for monitoring the presence of cations of impregnating solution in a paper was designed and tested. The impregnating compound is applied to the paper sheet in the form of microdrops of 3micrometer diameter by a compressed air nebuliser. Water soluble compounds containing cations of Mg2+, Zr4+, Zn2+, Na+, K+ and Ca2+ were used in combination with two types of paper which differed in their thicknesses and surface properties. Following conclusions could be drawn: it takes between 11 and 37 seconds for the impregnating compound to reach the other side of the paper sheet of type I. The fastest impregnation was achieved with Mg(HCO3)2 (ts = 11 s, tN = 9 s); while the Zirmel 1000 impregnator was the slowest one. The impregnation rate for the paper type I drops in the following order: Mg(HCO3)2, NaHCO3, Zn(CH3COO), Ca(CH3COO)2, K2CO3, Zirmel 1000, KHCO3.|
