Title of the thesis:Design of a bioreactor for propionic acid production
Summary:The main aim of this bachelor project is to design a batch stirred bioreactor for the production of propionic acid. On the basis of the required annual production of propionic acid and knowledge of cell culture and reaction kinetics, an appropriate volume of the bioreactor is designed. Using the recommended ratios of geometric characteristics, its particular dimensions are determined. The obtained information compiles a mathematical model consisting of a material, enthalpy and simple economic balance. The material balance determines the consumption of major substrates and the amount of products and biomass produced during the process. The total amount of heat released during the process is calculated as a result of both - the chemical reaction and the dissipation by stirring. From the entalphy balance, the required quantity and output temperature of cooling water is obtained. The length of the cooling coil is calculated on the basis of the recommendations depending on the height/diameter ratio of the bioreactor. A simple economic balance is a summary of the investment and the annual operating costs of major facilities and substrates, cooling water and electricity.
