Current trend in heat supply to buildings is utilization of renewable energy sources as geothermal energy, heat pumps, solar systems, as well as wind and water energy. This trend presents a response on the finding of the European Union that more than 40 percent of energy is consumed by buildings. It is necessary to realize that for instance according to the analysis of the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic, more than 35 percent of the heat is generated by domestic boilers combusting natural gas, and more than 60 percent is generated by centralized heating plants, which to large extent also combust natural gas. These are the main facts that were the inspiration for this work. The submitted work presents an analysis of the current situation regarding utilization of primary energy sources, as well as their energy efficiency. In selected objects experimental measurements were carried out, which aimed to reveal the current state of the transformation of primary energy to heat, and thus to determine possibilities of improvement of their energy efficiency. The work analyses and describes different types of methodologies for evaluation of energy efficiency, which is the main qualitative parameter of the efficiency of energy transformation. The work further analyses comparisons with current legislation requirements on the utilization of primary energy sources, as well as with the requirements on the impact on the environment. It presents a complex view into the field of heat sources, from their operation conditions to the ways of evaluation and propositions for improved energy efficiency if technically and economically possible. The result of this work is an integrated conception of the ways the boilers are operated, the methodology of their evaluation and the possibilities of their combination with different types of heating systems.
