Summary: Bakteriofágy sa používajú v potravinárskom priemysle ako biokontrolné činidlá na zníženie zaťaženia baktérií, a tým znižujú potenciál pre ľudskú infekciu. Použitie bakteriofágov na detekciu bakteriálnych ľudských patogénov znamená revolúciu v modernej mikrobiológii. Avšak, ich použitie vyvoláva obavy verejnosti o začlenení živých vírusov vo výrobkoch určených na ľudskú spotrebu.
