Summary: Reducing the “leakage” of aqueous based chemicals applied on the surface of machine finished papers is of crucial importance to reduce the ecological and economic footprint of biobased materials such as paper and which allows us at the same time to work on a sustainable solution to replace polymeric substrates which are currently used to manufacture films. Ecological studies also revealed that the currently available biobased substrate, called glassine paper has also considerable disadvantages as it requires quite a lot of electrical energy to finely grind pulp fibers as well as thermal energy to dry those paper grades. The task will be to collect and interpret the information from publicly available literature to be able to differentiate strategies to improve the hold-out of aqueous coatings or glues by modifying the paper bulk (e.g. by adding functional wet-end chemicals) or by modifying the paper surface (e.g. by applying those chemicals more selectively on the paper surface). The applied part of the master thesis will then involve lab tests to follow the path which appeared most promising way forward based on your previous findings from scouting the literature.
