Energy geostructures, more properly defined in a theoretical sense as thermo-active geostructures, are an innovative technology that couples the structural support role of conventional ground structures with that of the ground heat exchanger of conventional shallow geothermal systems. Energy geostructures can involve deep foundations (e.g., piles, piers, barrettes), earth retaining structures (e.g., diaphragm walls and sheet pile walls), shallow foundations (e.g., footings, base slabs), tunnels linings and anchors as well as pavements. The thesis will be focused on geotechnical aspects of energy geostructures design.
