Summary: Network Intrusion Detection via Similarity Search alt. "Detecting Network Threats Using a Similarity Search" alt. "Network Threats Detection Using a Similarity Search" Network intrusion prevention and detection systems are based on analysis of network flows and traffic. The detection is either based on signatures - on known patterns and programmed rules, or the detection is based on anomaly detection techniques. Similarity search can be used for anomaly detection. The goal of this thesis is to practically evaluate similarity search methods for intrusion detection. Tasks: 1. Document the techniques and approaches in the area network intrusion detection. 2. Learn about similarity search methods. 3. Perform analysis of similarity search methods from practical point of view on network intrusion dataset. 4. Evaluate security of the obtained results (detection and false-positive ratios), also in comparison with practical deployment requirements (speed of detection, amout of memory and computing power required).
