Project description:The project is focused on an investigation of a possibility to use catabolic ability of microorganisms to degrade persistent chlorinated hydrophobic organic pollutants in different environmental components (water, soil). Study of the effect of the xenobiotics on microbial cells will be included in the project because presence of these compounds markedly influences biodegradation ability, survival, and colonization of microorganisms at application in bioremediation technologies during decontamination of the environment. The goals of the project are to study metabolic pathways of chloroaromatics, intermediate and endproducts, their toxicity; to isolate and identify particular microbial strains with the appropriate biodegradation ability; to investigate biodegradation of PCBs, PCP, and PAHs in liquid media and defined soil samples, in aerated and intact soil profiles; to determine the effect of chloroaromatics as potential stress factors on microbial cells (membrane fluidity) with the emphasis on content and composition of total lipids and fatty acids in the major lipid membrane structures; and to study visible-light-induced catalytic degradation and chemical oxidation (Fenton reaction) of the persistent organic pollutants as a pretreatment step of biodegradation.
