Hydraulic Research on Control Gates of Water Structures

Project description:Operation safety of water structures (WS) is one of the most watched criteria within international benchmarks for the assessment of water structures. It is related to increasingly occurring "flash" floods. The culminating flood discharges must be minimized by the water structures. Basic stilling ability of water structures have their reservoirs. Different types of control gates are used for regulation of the outflow from the reservoir. Dual radial gates are used as control gates at weir structures within the Váh Cascade reservoirs (the Hričov WS, the Drahovce WS). Practically since when these WS were put into operation no research on the real capacity of these gates has been realized. So far used capacity curves were determined by the designers about 50 years ago using simple formulas with estimated hydraulic coefficients. In the hydraulic point of view the dual radial control gates are able to control the flow by an overflow (important for passing of floating ice and debris through the weir) and flow under the gate (important for passing of bed sediments through the weir). This makes the dual radial gates hydraulically complicated objects. In view of the increasing need for more precise discharge control, the significance of these water structures and the uniqueness of their control gates the research is focused primarily on such a type of control gates. The research on the capacity of dual radial control gates is based on the globally accepted procedure, which combines experimental research in a hydraulic laboratory with field measurements in real conditions of a water structure with mathematical modelling. By applying particular research methods and their mutual combinations will lead to effective and accurate and reliable hydraulic characteristics of the dual radial gates. The hydraulic research on the capacity of the dual radial gates of WS contributes to more accurate and safer water control and can be applied within Europe for similar water structure systems.
