Project description:Carbon-rich materials from the incomplete combustion of biomass (termed biochars BCH) produced by hydrothermal carbonization (hydrochars HCH) or pyrolysis (pyrochars PCH) have high sorption capacities, so they are usable in wastewater treatment and agriculture / groundwater protection (improving certain soil properties). The main hypotheses of this project are: (i) to examine, if properties of different feedstock are reflected in different rates for HCH and PCH production, (ii) to evaluate physico-chemical properties of HCH and PCH prepared in different condition from different feedstock and (iii) sorption affinity of HCH and PCH to water soluble organic pollutant (WSC). In addition to this, (iv) investigate the influence of BCH amendments to soil on WSC retention/degradation and (v) possibilities of used BCH liquidation by combustion (in cone calorimeter) will be investigated further. Data obtained from this basic research project can be outlined for the LCA development of BCH materials in the future
