|Project description:||The Water Framework Directive (WFD 2000/60/EC) has established a framework for Community action in the field of water policy aimed at protection, maintaining and improving the aquatic environment, as well as sustainable, well balanced and fair utilisation of waters in EU. The WFD introduced a new approach to water management, and set a timetable with specific deadlines to EU member states to prepare river basin management plans, including programmes of measures. The environmental objective for artificial water bodies and heavily modified water bodies (AWB and HMWB) is to achieve their good ecological potential. To assess the ecological potential, it is necessary to develop assessment systems based on relevant aquatic biological communities (biological quality elements). For HMWB and AWB, fish communities and communities of benthic invertebrates are considered most reliable. The main aim of the project is to develop a new method and assessment systems to assess the ecologicalpotential of HMWB based on fish communities, and with a support from other relevant aquatic biological communities and supporting physic-chemical and hydro-morphological elements of quality. The development of a new method and assessment systems for ecological potential is currently an urgent task, required by EC within bilateral negotiations with Slovak Government. To meet this commitment of Slovakia to EC, new assessment systems are to be developed. These new assessment systems (new method) need to be prepared not only at the national level, but also need to be harmonised with neighbouring countries that share water bodies with Slovakia. Moreover, the new method, including the newly developed classification schemes, needs to be intercalibrated at the European level. In case of fish communities, fishery management is an important component of the ecological potential of HMWB. The outputs from this project will be also applicable in optimising recreational and/or commercial fisheries.|
