Project description:The growing concern of the public for food quality and health has driven the food industry to increase the microbial and chemical safety of its products while promoting new products with longer shelf life and/or low processing cost. Besides, the public policy encourages the reduction of the use of non renewable resources (fossil fuels, metals, and plastics), while maintaining the use of convenient packaging (portionable, ready-to-use-and-serve). A particularly interesting solution would consist in extending the recycling of packaging materials for food contact use, while preserving the safety of food products. On first sight, these new trends may seem antagonist but require the stakeholders to innovate in various fields: new materials, new safety assessment procedures. In order to contribute to this ambitious challenge, COPADELINK project will help the food and packaging sector by assessing recycled materials and processing technologies (coating based technologies), which may fulfil aforementioned specifications and may induce an active antimicrobial effect. Since these new concept of food packaging may induce new safety issues, COPADELINK will innovate in the field of chemical risk assessment by developing new promising predictive approaches of the migration of packaging substances. In return, these outputs may also impact the EU public policy by suggesting new recommendations or regulations.
