Project description:The proposed project is based on the successful bilateral collaboration, project No. SK-SRB-2016-0002, where the team submitting this project proposal, has for the first time demonstrated the possibility of the formation of Au-C bonds in polyethylene (PE) during implantation, where Au would replace hydrogen in the polyethylene chain as well as cross-linking of polyethylene chains via the Au atom. This follow-up project proposal concentrates on a broader range of transition-metals implanted in polyethylene, particularly Fe, Ni, Co, Ag and Au, in which case we expect a strong surface plasmon resonance effect (Ag, Au) and magnetic response (Fe, Ni, Co), which is of high interest for optical and magnetic storage applications as well as biosensors. Preliminary results on Fe implanted PE already confirm magnetic response at fluences around 2E17 ions/cm2. Combination of the experimental and theoretical capabilities at ATRI MTF STU and INS Vinča provides a complex synthesis-analysis-interpretation package required to conduct this research, as the team proposing this project has already demonstrated in the past.
