Project description:Hard coatings based on nitrides or carbonitrides of transition metals have, over the past decade, significantly contributed to increasing the service life of cutting and forming tools, but also to specific products of mobile equipment. The main requirement for this type of material is high hardness and wear resistance. These properties should also be exhibited by coatings at elevated temperatures above 800°C. However, the most commonly used Ti-Al-N and Cr-Al-N coatings show at the temperatures above 800°C a significant degradation of properties associated with the formation of oxides which release nitrogen from the nitrides and thus impair the functional layer properties. Alloying of the coatings with the transition metals, lanthanides and boron, where oxidation reactions occur at the temperatures higher by at least 200 - 400°C is one of the prospective directions for increasing the oxidation resistance of the coatings. In some cases, the formed oxides have excellent sliding properties, which can be utilised in technological processes of machining to increase cutting edge durability. This type of coatings is strengthened due to the spinodal decompositions of coexisting phases simultaneously with oxidation processes at high temperatures. These mechanisms are currently not sufficiently investigated. The project is focused right on this area with the main goal focused on finding and optimizing physical procedures that increase the temperature stability and oxidation resistance of selected coating types and creating a physicchemical model describing the processes associated with it. The specific objective is to verify the HiPIMS technology for modifying the phase composition of coatings and to determine the effect of high energy impulses in forming of coatings with a homogeneous phase composition that cannot be achieved by ARC methods.
