|Project description:||Austenitic stainless steels exhibiting usually an excellent corrosion resistance are used as a structural material in chemical, petrochemical and energy industries. However, when subjected to heating in the temperature range of 500-800°C, they are prone to sensitisation. In the sensitised condition, the steels are quite susceptible to intergranular corrosion and intergranular stress corrosion cracking. The sensitisation is caused by the precipitation of chromium rich carbides at the grain boundaries. The precipitation of carbides M23C6 causes formation of the chromium depletion regions with a chromium content below 12 wt.%.|
