|Project description:||Magnetic molecular photo-switchable solid materials have been proposed for application in a new generation of displaying devices as well as of data-recording units. These compounds are characterized by a molecular bistability: the ?low-spin? and ?high-spin? states could coexist. The two states differ in their structural, volume, optical and magnetic characteristics which manifests in a thermo-chromic and photo-chromic effects (color change as a function of temperature or pressure). In some cases there exists a hysteresis effect which can be exploited as a memory of the material. This hysteresis behavior is controlled by forming domains in the solid state. The nature of the domain formation as well as a marked cooperativeness in the solid state are still not well understood.|
