Project description:The basic starting point of the project is to develop accurate and efficient methods suitable for determining the parameters of mathematical models of infiltration and contaminant transport with adsorption in porous media. These methods enable construction of significantly cheaper and more efficient measuring instruments. In the first part of the project we will develop an original mathematical method and numerical software for determining infiltration parameters in porous medium on the basis of centrifugation The suggested inverse method for parameters determination requires only the measurements of the time evolution of center of gravity and momentum of inertia of the sample during centrifugstion under the prescribed rotational speed. It does not require any information on saturation distribution in the sample during the centrifugation in contradiction to the present methods. The design of the measuring device is part of the project. The method is original and after its practical and successful verification it might be patented. In the second part of the project a numerical method for determining the hydrogeological and geochemical parameters of the model for contaminant transport with nonlinear adsorption will be developed. To determine the required model parameters the input and output contaminant concentrations of the sample will be measured.
