Project description:The research project consists of three subtasks. The first one is devoted to the in-situ and laboratory diagnosis of the physical and chemical state of the oldest reinforced and prestressed concrete bridges in Slovakia. The results should have implications not only for better diagnosis of old concrete bridges, but the acquired knowledge will also be used in the design of new bridges. Learning from the positive solutions of history would thus be reflected in the current design and execution practise. This could greatly help to gain knowledge that will lead to prolongation of the service life of these newly proposed designed engineering works. The second part of the task is based on some facts obtained during the solution of the first sub-tasks. It deals with the state of the secondary component of prestressing by reaching bending resistance of prestressed bridges and by occurring and development of plastic joints in continuous prestressed bridges. The results will be applied not only to static assessment of existing structures, but also in the design of new bridges. The third sub-task is devoted to the design and execution of the transition areas of bridges with respect to the new conditions of their execution in the present. The task is fully based on the practise requirements for the examination of this issue, and during its solution, it is also possible to relate to the first subtask.
