Title of the thesis:Effectiveness of teaching the subject Basics of Informatics in the system of mastery learning
Summary:Dissertation thesis presents a summary of the results obtained by examining the impact of applying mastery learning strategy on the effectiveness of teaching a university course. The main objective of this work is to experimentally verify the effectiveness of teaching a university programming course Basics of Informatics in the system of mastery learning compared to the traditional teaching method of the subject. The secondary objective of the dissertation is to conduct an in-depth theoretical research in the field of mastery learning system implementation. The author uses primary and secondary sources and reviews past and current research in Slovakia and abroad. The thesis consists of five chapters, an introduction and conclusion. The author provides the basic concepts such as the effectiveness of course teaching, systems of teaching, mastery learning. The thesis sets out the historical context of mastery learning and deals with its successful implementation into teaching. Topic discussion is supplemented by summary tables. The main hypothesis of the empirical research assumes that teaching the course Basics of Informatics in mastery learning is more effective than traditional teaching methods. The author verifies the effectiveness of teaching by assessing student results - their performance in cognitive domain and their satisfaction with teaching. In order to assess the research results, the author employed quantitative statistical methods and qualitative research methods as well. Conclusions of this natural pedagogical experiment conducted at the Faculty of Management Science and Informatics of the University of Zilina are summarized in the discussion section. The results demonstrate the applicability of the mastery learning system in university teaching. The effectiveness of teaching in the cognitive domain reached the desired statistical significance through examination of student results according to their previous academic achievements. The experiment confirms international experience with positive effects of the mastery learning system in cognitive and affective domain.
